rebaibal

English: ‘revival’. New non-core lexicon.

Rebaibal spread from the Telefomin area from about 1977 following the establishment of the Baptist Mission there in the early 1970s. Traditional initiation and Telefomin’s Afek cult were rejected and sacred objects revealed in public; adherents speak in tongues and have ecstatic seizures (see Hyndman 1994).
