Source language unclear: any clues?

There are a number of species of Amaranthus. Some are regionally endemic; others, e.g. A. caudatus and A. cruentus / A. hybridis, are of S. and C. American origin. See May (1984: 56-57), Rehm and Espig (1991: 139, 159), Siemonsma and Piluek (1993: 82), Sillitoe (183: 53-57).
