Amerika

Urban Tok Pisin speakers, like everyone else, have favourite African American TV shows, rap singers and movie stars. A few African Americans visit provinces as Peace Corps volunteers, but cannot be said to have a major presence in rural areas. However, conversations with comparatively well paid African American sailors on merchant ships calling at Rabaul are said to have led the leading boat skipper of the time, Sumsuma of Tanga, to instigate the Rabaul strike of 1929. Further encounters during WWII impressed the Papua New Guineans who met them and planted a desire for social change and an improvement in economic conditions.
